SEO terms, explained plainly

Clear definitions of the SEO terms you will come across, with examples and practical advice from founder Lay Nadji.

Alt text

Alt text is a short written description of an image, added in the HTML alt attribute. Screen readers read it aloud, browsers show it when an image fails to load, and search engines use it to understand what the image shows.

Dofollow link

A dofollow link is a normal hyperlink that search engines are free to follow and count as a vote for the page it points to. "Dofollow" is SEO slang: there is no dofollow attribute. A link is dofollow simply because it has no nofollow, sponsored or ugc value.

H1 to H6 heading tags

Heading tags, from <h1> to <h6>, give a web page its structure. The H1 is the main title, H2s are the main sections, H3s are subsections of an H2, and so on. Search engines, screen readers and AI tools all use them to understand what a page covers.

Meta description

A meta description is a short summary of a web page, written in the page's HTML. Search engines often show it under the page title in search results. It doesn't affect rankings directly, but a good one persuades more people to click.

Nofollow link

A nofollow link is a hyperlink with rel="nofollow" in its HTML. It tells search engines that you don't vouch for the page you are linking to, so the link shouldn't count as an endorsement. Visitors can still click it normally.
